The I-595 Express Corridor Improvements Project has been divided into five construction segments, A through E, to help expedite the work. The Corridor Map below shows the location of the segments. Each of the construction segments has up to seven major phases of work, generally starting from S.R. 84 north and south of I-595 and working toward the I-595 median. Each major phase of construction within a segment represents a traffic shift to accommodate construction activities.
Roadway construction began in Segment C in February 2010 in the vicinity of Pine Island Road. Westbound I-595 traffic is currently traveling on the new lanes constructed in the I-595 median from University Drive to Nob Hill Road. Roadway and drainage construction continues in both directions of S.R. 84. The two westbound “braided” ramp systems were opened in the fourth quarter of 2011, greatly improving the ingress and egress for westbound I-595 and S.R. 84 between Davie Road and Nob Hill Road.
Construction in Segment D started in June 2010. Roadway work continues on the widening of westbound I-595 east of Davie Road. Other activities include the construction of drainage, driving piles and building mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls for 10 new and widened bridge structures. In September 2011 the new direct connection ramp from westbound I-595 to northbound Florida’s Turnpike opened. In December 2011 the “missing link” of westbound S.R. 84 also opened, nearly one year earlier than originally anticipated.
Segments A and B officially got underway in November 2010. The widening of the bridges at 136 Avenue, Flamingo Road, Hiatus Road and Nob Hill Road is underway to accommodate the Express Lanes at the overpasses. The contractor has also begun the construction of the Express Lanes in the median with the placement of asphalt and the direct connection ramps to/from the Sawgrass Expressway. The contractor continues to install drainage structures along eastbound S.R. 84.
The final segment of the project, Segment E on Florida’s Turnpike, started in March 2011 with the construction of ground mounted sound barriers on both the east and west sides of Florida’s Turnpike, north of I-595 and the widening of the northbound Turnpike bridge over I-595. The contractor continues with the installation of drainage structures and the widening of northbound Florida’s Turnpike, north of I-595, and southbound Florida’s Turnpike, south of I-595.

Motorists are urged, as always, to drive with extra caution through the construction zones and to observe the posted speed limit signs.
